Explore the Marvels of Tarangire
Nestled just off the renowned northern Tanzania Safari Circuit, the park is situated between the vast Masai Steppe meadows to the southeast and the shimmering lakes of the Great Rift Valley to the north and west. The northern region of Tarangire is home to the permanent Tarangire River, often called the park’s lifeline, especially during the dry season when much of the area turns arid. This river flows northward, exiting the park at its northwestern edge and emptying into Lake Burungi. In the south, several expansive swamps transform into lush green plains during the dry season.
Tarangire is home to a diverse array of animals. This park has one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, with several herds numbering up to 300 members each. In addition, there are large numbers of impalas, elands, buffaloes, giraffes, Bohor reedbuck, Coke’s hartebeest, Thompson’s gazelle, greater and lesser kudu, and on rare occasions, the unusual gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx are also seen.
The birds within Tarangire are numerous, with over 545 species identified here. The stunning yellow-collared lovebirds and the shy starlings are abundant, along with many other species.
